Check My Money keeps simple estimates separate from rules that need extra inputs. This page records the settings, official sources and important exclusions used across the 2026–27 tools.

Medicare family low-income reduction

2026–27 family thresholds

The family calculator uses a standard family threshold of $47,238, increased by $4,338 for each relevant dependant. Where the senior/pensioner threshold treatment applies, the base family threshold is $61,623.

For planning, it estimates the combined family levy after the family low-income reduction rather than inventing spouse-by-spouse precision.

HELP / STSL

2026–27 marginal compulsory repayment

The minimum repayment income is $69,528 and the next indexed threshold is $129,717. The formula applies 15% to repayment income above the first threshold, then 17% above the second, subject to the 10% of repayment-income cap.

The detailed HELP calculator builds repayment income from taxable income (excluding assessable FHSS released amounts), reportable fringe benefits, total net investment loss, reportable super contributions and exempt foreign employment income. If a remaining loan balance is entered, the estimate is capped at that balance.

Salary-only tools still use annualised salary as a faster proxy and disclose that limitation.

Salary vs contractor rate

Financial equivalence, not worker-status classification

The contractor-rate tool compares an employee salary package with contractor revenue after entered business expenses and realistic billable hours/weeks. Employee package value includes an estimated 12% minimum SG amount subject to the 2026–27 annual maximum contribution base.

If contractor super is selected as paid on top, that value is added separately. The calculator does not decide whether SG is legally payable: some contractors paid mainly for personal labour can still be employees for SG purposes, and an ABN by itself does not determine the outcome.

Contractor rates are compared excluding GST. The page flags when scenario revenue reaches the general $75,000 GST turnover threshold, but it does not determine registration under every current/projected-turnover or special rule.

Numbers stay local

Calculator values are processed in the browser. Copy and print/PDF features operate locally. Analytics hooks deliberately exclude entered salary, tax, take-home, super and other calculated financial values.

Estimates can differ from payroll, an actual contract or a tax return because deductions, offsets, exemptions, withholding schedules, business structures, PSI, insurance, employment rights, contribution history and other circumstances are not fully modelled.
